Franklin Clinton

Franklin Clinton is one of Grand Theft Auto V's three playable protagonists, alongside Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips. Of the trio, Franklin is the youngest and the one with the cleanest arc — V opens with him working as a repo man and closes with him established as something else.

Role in V

  • Repo man register. Franklin starts V working a repo job, which functions as a Trojan horse for V's intro to Los Santos: the player drives around the city under a thin pretext, learning the geography and the social hierarchy.
  • Chamberlain Hills origin. Franklin's home neighborhood is the Strawberry / South-LS-coded part of Los Santos. The contrast between his origin and Rockford Hills (Michael's neighborhood) is visual and narrative.
  • Mentor arc. Franklin is the protagonist Michael takes under his wing. The dynamic is partly father-son-coded, partly mutually transactional — Michael needs an apprentice; Franklin needs a way out.
  • Best friend dynamic. Franklin's friendship with Lamar Davis is one of V's most emotionally specific writing. Lamar is loyal, chaotic, and the relationship grounds Franklin's character through the game.

Why he matters

Franklin is V's most aspirational protagonist — the one with somewhere to go. Where Michael is stuck and Trevor is unhinged, Franklin has trajectory. That gives V's story an actual arc on his end: by the end of the game, Franklin's life has moved.

He also represents Rockstar's most direct attempt at writing a Black protagonist since 2004's CJ in San Andreas. Whether V landed that writing as well as San Andreas did is a discussion the gaming press has had at length; Franklin sits in the middle of that conversation.

What's connected

  • Michael De Santa — Franklin's mentor across V's middle act
  • Trevor Philips — the third protagonist, less directly tied to Franklin but present across the trio's heists
  • Lamar Davis — Franklin's lifelong best friend; the everyday-rhythm partner across V's missions
  • Los Santos — Franklin's home, especially the Chamberlain Hills / Strawberry region
