Jason Duval
Returning protagonist confirmed in Trailers 1 and 2, paired with Lucia Caminos. Drifter / criminal background and likely former military, set against modern-day Leonida.
Jason Duval
Jason Duval is the second of GTA VI's two playable protagonists — older than Lucia by a few years on visual read, and coded across trailers and Newswire stills as the half of the partnership that already knows everyone. Where Lucia opens the arc walking out of state custody, Jason opens it doing what he was doing the day before: drifting between cartel-adjacent freelance work in coastal Leonida and whatever pays the rent that week. Rockstar's official framing puts him in a Bonnie-and-Clyde register with Lucia. He's the half who doesn't have to be told how to disappear.
What's confirmed
- Name: Jason Duval. Surname confirmed alongside Trailer 2 marketing.
- First public reveal: Trailer 1, December 5, 2023.
- Setting: Modern-day Leonida, splitting time between Vice City and the Leonida Keys area.
- Narrative framing: romantic and criminal partnership with Lucia Caminos. The Newswire copy frames the duo, not Jason individually.
- Visual identity: sun-weathered, often shot in tactical / camo-coded clothing that has driven a wide fan-read of "former military." Rockstar has not confirmed a service background.
- Voice actor: not officially announced as of May 4, 2026.
What we're watching for
Watch Trailer 3 for:
- Backstory. Is Jason ex-military or just dressed for the climate? The visual coding leans toward service history, but the trailer dialogue does not establish it. Could equally be a contractor / drifter framing.
- Cartel involvement. Several T1/T2 cuts place Jason in handoff scenes that read as drug-trade-adjacent. Whether the cartel is the central antagonist, a layered web, or a single early-act faction is unconfirmed.
- Relationship history with Lucia. The trailers establish them as already partnered at the opening of the game. Whether the player sees their meeting in flashback, plays through their early relationship, or starts mid-arc with them already entangled is an open structural question.
- Voice actor. Troy Baker has been the most-circulated fan-attribution rumor, sourced to no one in particular. Treat as rumor; not confirmed.
- Switchable PoV. Whether the player can toggle Jason / Lucia at will (GTA V protagonist-switch model) or whether missions hard-cast to a specific PoV is the highest-stakes gameplay question for both characters.
Why it matters
Jason has to be the structural anchor of the partnership, and that's a harder writing job than it sounds. In GTA V, the three protagonists each carried their own crime story alone, and the switch system was a feature stacked on top of three independent arcs. In GTA VI, the public framing puts the partnership at the center — which means Jason has to work as a foil to Lucia in a way that gives the player two genuinely distinct points of view, not one protagonist and one sidekick. Rockstar has never tried that at this scale. Michael and Trevor in V were individually self-sufficient most of the time; Lucia and Jason can't be.
The other thing Jason represents: Rockstar's continued comfort with morally ambiguous male protagonists. Tommy Vercetti, Niko Bellic, Trevor Phillips — these aren't redemption arcs. They're unblinking studies of men who do crime for a living. Jason fits the lineage. The question, as with each of those characters, is whether the writing is sharp enough to make the lifestyle feel chosen rather than inevitable. Get that wrong and Jason is a stereotype. Get it right and he's the next Niko.
