Blaine County
Blaine County is the rural and desert region of Grand Theft Auto V's state of San Andreas. It sits north of Los Santos and contains V's wilderness, deserts, mountain ranges, and small towns. If Los Santos is V's satirical Los Angeles, Blaine County is V's satirical inland California / Nevada border country — meth labs, militia compounds, beach-town tourism, ranch operations, and Mount Chiliad presiding over all of it.
Role in V
- Trevor's home. Trevor Philips lives in Sandy Shores, the desert-coded town in Blaine County. Trevor's missions originate here; his Trevor Philips Industries operates from the surrounding desert.
- The hinterland. Most of V's map by area is in Blaine County rather than Los Santos. The wilderness, the desert, the agricultural belts, Mount Chiliad — all of it sits in Blaine County's geographic frame.
- Smaller named towns. Sandy Shores (desert / meth-belt), Paleto Bay (north-coast small town), Grapeseed (agricultural belt). Each has a distinct register and acts as a setting for specific Trevor / Michael / Franklin missions.
- Mount Chiliad. The iconic mountain in northern Blaine County. The Mount Chiliad mural / mystery is one of GTA V's most-discussed pieces of in-game lore — community speculation has run for over a decade about what (if anything) the mural means.
Why it matters
Blaine County is the structural reason V feels larger than its predecessors. Earlier GTAs had hinterlands but they were sparse. V's Blaine County is sustained playspace — the player drives across it, runs missions inside it, hunts in it, and discovers easter eggs across it for years.
For players who lived through V's Online phase, Blaine County is also the backdrop for many of GTA Online's Heists update missions and ongoing freemode play. The military base (Fort Zancudo) sits on the boundary between Los Santos and Blaine County and is one of GTA Online's enduring gameplay zones.
Tonally, Blaine County is V's clearest satire of inland California / Nevada border culture: the survivalist register, the meth economy, the desert tourism, the "we don't trust LA" post-LA register. Sandy Shores in particular is the satirical anchor — it's everything Los Santos is not.
